Anuria is a condition when the kidneys cannot produce urine. If proper treatment is not immediately given, anuria can cause permanent kidney damage which causes more serious conditions, which can be life threatening.
Generally, the kidneys produce between 1-2 liters of urine every day. Urine contains metabolic waste products that need to be removed. If urine is not released by the body, the substances and fluids can accumulate in the body.
Recognize the Causes of Anuria
One of the main causes of anuria is kidney failure, a condition in which kidney function does not work. Kidney failure can cause increased blood pressure and decreased red blood cell production. Then, uncontrolled diabetes can cause diabetic ketoacidosis, which also triggers acute kidney failure. Besides the condition of high blood pressure (hypertension) can also be a cause of anuria. Over time, uncontrolled high blood pressure can cause the arteries around the kidneys to narrow, weaken or harden. This then causes kidney disorders, even kidney failure resulting in anuria. Some other causes of anuria are closely related to kidney conditions, namely:Kidney stones
Kidney stones are formed from mineral deposits from your urine. Kidney stones can become large and block the passage of urine. This condition also causes pain that is generally felt in the waist.
Chronic kidney disease
Chronic kidney disease is a long-term form of kidney failure, where there is a gradual decline in kidney function. If chronic kidney disease reaches an advanced stage, fluids, electrolytes and harmful waste can accumulate in your body.
Kidney tumor
Tumors in the kidney, in addition to disrupting kidney function, can also suppress and inhibit the passage of urine.
How to treat anuria
To diagnose anuria, the doctor will ask your symptoms first, such as fatigue, problems in urination, whether there is blood in the urine and if any part of the body is swollen. After that, the doctor may recommend certain tests that can also help diagnose the cause of anuria, which are:- Blood test
- Urine test
- Biopsy sample of kidney tissue
- MRI and CT scan
- Renal scintigraphy, a test to test your kidney function through medical nuclear technology.
